White Water Rafting
White water rafting is definitely not for the faint-hearted, but those in search of the ultimate in extreme sports could do worse than take advantage of the excellent and challenging waters of Chamonix in France. With breath-taking natural beauty and a wealth of sporting activity, the area is home to ideal rafting conditions, allowing visitors to experience the great outdoors at its very best.
The summer months are popular for rafters and it`s then that the conditions are most favourable, with level waters and warmer temperatures making things more pleasant. Rafting is well-suited to rivers and lakes alike and there are plenty to choose from here.
Three top spots in the region which offer great rafting opportunities are Le Giffre, Dora Baltea and L`Arvre and all offer something different to the eager adventurer, keen to indulge in some first-class white water rafting.
L`Arve is an easy to navigate but strong river, which is fed by the Mont Blanc glaciers. It is relatively gentle making it well suited to beginners or those within mixed age or ability groups. Meanwhile Le Giffre is better suited to those with some prior experience due to its fast-flowing, invigorating waters. Last but not least, Dora Baltea offers the most intense experience thanks to its powerful waters and unpredictable waves, especially in May and June when melting snow brings up the water levels.
For the absolute novice, courses are available as are a choice of companies who can offer accompanied experiences. There are countless flexible options including introductory adventures and those which take place over several hours or even several days. With a choice of different rafts available for use and many beautiful local areas to explore, white water rafting is all geared up to be the experience of a lifetime.
Those seeking that elusive adrenaline rush are certainly well catered for in and around Chamonix, but it`s important to note that safety should be paramount as there are some associated dangers, however small and rare. When choosing a course provider or guide, ensure that you are confident in their abilities, professionalism and safety procedures and always adhere to professional guidelines.
On any holiday Car Hire is a luxury, but in more rural areas or those with difficult terrain it becomes much more of a necessity. Use of a car guarantees further exploration and discovery and even facilitates entry into neighbouring countries, but booking ahead is a good idea especially in peak times or the most popular locations.

Golf in the Chamonix Valley
With its breath-taking Alpine views and stunning mountain ranges, the Chamonix Valley is one of the most picturesque places to play a round of golf. Play golf here and your hobby will become a holiday, quickly providing just the right atmosphere in which to relax and unwind.
Favoured by visitors with a keen interest in mountaineering and all its associated tales and legends, the Valley is well known and popular with people from all over the world. A friendly town, `Cham`, as it is known, offers a variety of different scenery, from green forests to mountain streams.
The 18-hole course begins at the foot of the Drus mountain, providing the keen golfer with a well-respected and challenging course, a practice area, a pitch-and-putt course as well as a driving range.
Originally constructed in 1934 with just four holes, the Chamonix Valley Golf Course was officially declared opened a year later with nine holes completed. By 1982, the course had been re-launched with 18 holes under the expert guidance of the golf-course architect, Robert Trent Jones Senior.
With the Chamonix Valley boasting both water hazards and well-protected greens, this is a technical course that requires skill and expertise. This may be a flat-ground course but there are enough bunkers, woodlands and streams to keep things interesting.
The standards of the course have always been kept high and this makes for a great and competitive 18 holes. However, don`t forget that due to snow and ice the golf course only becomes playable from May 31st to October 1st.
With a number of tournaments taking place at this course, visitors benefit from the opportunity to watch some of the best players in the game. Although if you`re keen to learn or play yourself, there are plenty of options for private lessons and long-term membership.
If you`re visiting, it`s well worth booking a tee time to ensure your place on the course or, if you`re travelling with others, group lessons can be booked between May and November. Buggy hire is best done in advance too, with an overnight bag depot making life much easier for those travelling.
At the Chamonix Valley Golf Course, tranquillity meets sport, creating some of the most idyllic greens you are likely to come across. A visit to such a unique place is something special, so why not treat yourself to a 2 fore1 offer and make the most of the course by getting two rounds for the price of one.
